Things i LIKE about Omnia

August 20, 2008 at 8:53 am (Omnia)

In the previous post, i talked about the bad things about Omnia..:P Not a big issue actually. Just my concern. Now i want to share with you what i like about Omnia although many people had mentioned before..:P

  1. Screen size – 3.2″ is really play big part of this Omnia. Although the resolution is WQVGA but i saw nothing wrong with this resolution. It looks sharp, bright and clear. Maybe later when my wife buy Diamond i can make details comparison..:) But so far i haven’t see any pixelate picture on my Omnia. And the best thing when you watch widescreen movie in fullscreen. Try it..You will never regret it. FYI, i really like device with big screen..Emm, can consider iPhone in the feature..:)
  2. Built in Storage - i bought 16gb version. With this size, i dont have to worry how much space i left. What are the things i need to delete, to clear up my storage. But i really care about ROM and RAM space..too small :(
  3. Memory Slot - beside built in storage, you can add to your microSD in ur Omnia. The biggest memory that currently available get in Malaysia is 8Gb. So total u can get about 24GB storage for your mobile phone! But dont store your porn movie too much..:D
  4. Camera – Omnia is the first windows mobile that came out with 5mp camera and also flash. The quality of the picture is quite good. You got a lot of camera settings. Some of the features like smile detection, image stabilizer are interesting. The auto focus works perfectly. What i can complaint is indoor picture and VGA recording. Dont expect too high if u taking picture during night/indoor and shooting video at VGA format.
  5. Bigger battery – Actually is not so big capacity. 1440mAh only. But compare to Diamond (900mAh) sure Omnia will win..:) Currently i managed to get maximum 2days for Omnia usage. I still dont get a chance to test with my normal usage because every 10 minutes i will look at my Omnia..:) Alwayz use wifi & GPS somemore..So far i’m satisified with battery performance..
  6. Haptic feedback – since the Malaysia version come with G3 firmware, the haptic feedback is no more working in some applications such as keyboard & keyboard. Heard that new firmware(H1) will include back this feature. I hope Samsung can give option to user either to use haptic feedback or not.
  7. Accelerometer – same like Diamond and Iphone. But this Omnia, all application can automatically rotate to landscape.
  8. Slim – i’m quite surprise when i first time hold the Omnia. It’s very slim (not to forget Diamond much more slimmer and smaller). Samsung has managed to fit all the powerful feature into this device. Congrats..
  9. Design – Omnia design is very elegant and more professional.
  10. DivX support – Omnia is one of the device certified for Divx playback. Actually u can install 3rd party software like CorePlayer to play divx movie. The drawback is u need to pay for license. And there is a freeware apps to play DivX, TCPMP but it cant work on my Omnia..So sad..
  11. Button to assign apps – Samsung has a lot of button which u can assign to open ur apps. 2 buttons at the front (call & hang button) and 4 buttons at the right side. The top and lowest button has 2 behaviours; press once or hold the button. And for zoom button, it can be use to adjust the volume. If you hold the button for a few seconds, it can zoom your application or open the flashlight. All of these button, u can customize based on ur need.
  12. Flash light – although this feature is just a plus point for Omnia, sometime it can be useful when ur house blackout or ur are in dark area. I’m sure at that time Omnia is in your pocket..:) So u dont have to find another torchlight.
  13. TV-Out – i havent recieve the cable but i’m looking forward to play movie/picture from Omnia and connect to Plasma TV. If the quality is not bad and able to stand for 2hours playback, so i dont have to burn my download movie and play it using my dvd player (my player can play divx but dont have usb slot).
  14. GPS – GPS fix is quite fast. Within 10-30 seconds it will be detected by the satellite. I dont use AGPS since i disable GPRS, WAP (using NoData software).
  15. Wifi – many phone/pda have wifi. Nothing much to talk about it. Useful when u go to cafe, restaurant or shopping complex when there is wifi hotspot. But still cannot compare when u use pc/laptop to surf internet..:(
  16. FM-Radio – also a feature that i seldom use but it can be useful in certain times..:)

What else? :) I might miss another feature but thats all i can think about now..
Feel free to add your comment..
Have a nice day..:)

btw, there’s a version of TCPMP that runs fine for the Omnia (the standard versions don’t work). It’s called TCPMP-0.72RC1-ARM-PPC-recomp-03.CAB.zip (found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=380387). It evens plays back FLV files natively !

    @Bayzee
Samsung Omnia is amazing!..even i faced the problem what you faced..Its normal..
    Here is the solution:
1.)Screen Sensitivity Issue-Sensitivity is very good its just that you need to re-align the screen to your touch pattern.you can do it under start>settings>screen

2.)Looks of Omnia:Its the best looking Windows Phone I suppose and when you compare it with Iphone..Iphone is more of cosmetics and less of features.Iphone is shit!..what would you do with looks if there are no features !!!

3.)Auto-Rotate:It works!!!! you just need to set it to automatic under settings>motion sensor.

4.)Daylight Issues: set the backlight to automatic under settings>backlight

    5.)Stylus:you dont need stylus!!

    Hi,

I think this site is great so easy to understand for a a complete techno gumbie like me!

Two things I am having problems with -

How do you get the keypad up when talking on a call (i.e. for options on automated calls etc)

and How do you get the album artwork over to your Omnia when loading music?

Please HELP in your very simple easy to understand helpful way…

    Thanx
    Maxx

1st question, since i disable samsung dialer i can easily popup my keypad or notes during call..

anyway with Samsung dialer, u still can do that if i’m not mistaken..
during call, press power to on back the screen and press middle button to unlock..
from there u can open up any app that u want..

2nd: normally i embedded album art into my song..so i dont have any problem to display album art in any player..
otherwise, u need to organize ur album music by folder..and for each album (folder) u need to have album art in jpeg file..rename it into folder.jpg and save it under the same folder..
then u just import ur album songs from player..

The problem with Windows Mobile is it doesn’t work as a phone all the time. The background processing of windows will prevent an incoming call from ringing. I am so sick and tired of hearing the phone beep to show 1 missed call when it was just sitting on my desk untouched all day long. And to add insult to injury the bluetooth doesn’t work either. When ever you pair a device to the phone and take the phone out of range and bring it back it looses the link. You have to then un-check “hands free”, save and re-check it for the device to work again. Basically making the hole hands free thing null and void.

For the love of god can someone make a freaking phone that works as a phone!

How can I disable the screen lock feature that locks the screen when you are on a call? Thi is REALLY frustrating to deal with when it flashes up every 10 seconds!!!

I want to let everybody know that I HATE MY VERIZON OMNIA!!! After having it for six months, I can’t think of anything I have ever hated as much as this phone. Verizon will not help, the phone locks up all the time and I have to hard reset at least once every two weeks and good luck trying to get games for it!

Once again…I HATE MY VERIZON OMNIA!!!

      AJ,
I agree… I have had the Omnia for over 6 months now and it is the worst phone I have had to date! It is horrible. Verizon seems to not know anything about this phone and I’m beginning to feel like it is a waste of money!
