Get your GPS quicker fix, without enabling Enhanced GPS
How many of you use your GPS without enabling Enhanced GPS?
For myself, i never use the Extra data download feature for enhancing GPS because it wil cost me using GPRS. Anyway, it would cause u to wait a few minutes (2-5) to get GPS fix.
Few days ago I found 1 thread from Modaco on how to “Get your GPS quicker fix, without enabling Enhanced GPS”
Below is the step on how to. I have tried it. And it works great. My GPS can get fix within not even 1 minutes not like before.
1. Go to Settings > System > Enhanced GPS and set both settings to “Disable”
2. Go to your device’s registry, and see the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver

3. Change the following string values to nothing (don’t delete them, just edit them and clear the value):
Â
4. Soft-reset your device
5. With File Explorer, go to My Device, and delete the two GPSID_log files you see, and the file named xtra. If you don’t soft-reset, you will not be able to delete some of them.
6. Check again the registry setting. Sometimes in rare cases it may revert the settings back – but that’s a general WM problem.
Â
After this, if you start your navigation software under clear sky, you can get a fix in a coulpe of minutes, without the use of XTRA, or any other data source, than pure native GPS satellites.
Note: to edit the regsitry u need registry tools like TotalCommander CE, Resco Registry (which come with Resco Explorer) etc..

I have GSPGate and set it on b/f running tomtom. If we set this, do we still need to activate GSPGate ?
[reply by Maks Pain]
I don’t have any idea on GPSGate. I guess it’s like Port Splitter right?
Without Port Spitter my GPS in Mapking couldn’t work.

This seems like its simply turning the logging off.
And that’s enough to make the GPS lock many times quicker?
I bought a Omnia just 3 days ago, and finally the GPS locked today.
It was amazing. I’m using route66 as the nav software.
By the way guys, upgrade your Omnia ROM to the latest which was released around october ~ november. It is a totally new phone.
Omnia is a master piece.
Ty Oh said,
November 26, 2008 at 1:18 am
OMG, I don’t believe it, I walked outside, took a cigarette out and while I was lighting it the GPS locked. It must have taken less than 15 seconds.
Do exactly as it says here.
I live in a apartment, so indoors, I have to take it to the window. It takes longer to lock, but less than 1 minute.
FYI these are my settings.
Software: Route66 Mobile Navigator 8
External GPS Settings: GPS program port COM2, GPS hardware port COM9 Baud rate 4800, Manage GPS automatically Checked.

Hi,
I am assuming the GPS fix described here refers to the GSM version of the Omnia. Would this work for the CDMA version of the Omnia recently released in the U.S. by Verizon?
Maks Pain said,

Radik,
well i’m not sure about that..
Ty Oh said,

Yes my Omnia a GSM version purchased in Germany, but my gut feeling is that GPS is GPS not GSM or CDMA, isn’t it?
Maks Pain said,
December 10, 2008 at 2:20 pm
I think it should be ok since this thing (GPS) is not related to the network frequency either GSM or CDMA..

Hi
“6. Check again the registry setting. Sometimes in rare cases it may revert the settings back – but that’s a general WM problem.”
after checking i found that the “old log file” reverted back.
so should i re do the whole step 1-6 or leave it as it is?

Lennon, sounds like you’re connecting to your car kit only using the handsfree profile and not stereo bluetooth (A2DP). All voice prompts will come through A2DP profile so you need to see if your car kit supports it. if it does check the device has that service enabled on your phone in the bluetooth settings for your car kit.

It works, but make sure your TT got signal before you do it. Here is the step I did:
1. restart the phone
2. click TT and let it find sattelites and locked the signal
3. close TT and go to your device’s registry, and see the key KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver
4. Change the following string values to nothing (don’t delete them, just edit them and clear the value):
* CurrentLogFile (originally \GPSID_log.txt)
* OldLogFile (originally \GPSID_log.bak)
5. Soft-reset your device
6. With File Explorer, go to My Device, and delete the two GPSID_log files you see, and the file named xtra. If you don’t soft-reset, you will not be able to delete some of them.
7. restart you phone
8. Check again the registry setting. Sometimes in rare cases it may revert the settings back – but that’s a general WM problem.
then it should work. just try it. I did first time without 1,2 step and it won’t work.
